2050 Consulting has had its climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), under the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) category. This means our emission reduction goals are now validated as science-based and aligned with the Paris Agreement’s ambition to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Setting targets aligned with climate science is incredibly important—something we have long advocated and encouraged others to do. Now, we’ve taken the same step ourselves. For us, this is a natural extension of our work to help solve the climate crisis and a clear statement that even smaller, specialized sustainability consulting firms can—and should—take this responsibility seriously.
“All change starts with a will and ambition. Over the past few years, we have supported around 40 Swedish companies in setting and validating their SBTi targets. That’s why it feels both important and natural for us to now go through the process in our own operations, and to become the first dedicated Swedish sustainability consulting firm with both short and long-term SBTi-approved climate goals,” says Markus Ekelund, CEO at 2050.
Ambition Beyond Requirements – With Scientific Grounding
2050’s climate targets include both short- and long-term plans. The short-term goal is to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 7 percent per year between 2024 and 2030. The long-term goal extends to 2040, aiming for a 95 percent reduction in emissions across scopes 1, 2, and 3, and neutralizing any remaining emissions.
“We’ve set climate targets for both the short and long term, with ambitions exceeding what is required by SBTi. For the long-term goal, despite our name, we believe 2050 is too far off—so our target is a 95 percent emissions reduction by 2040. For the short-term goal, we aim to cut emissions by 7 percent per year, which is why we are now ramping up efforts to reduce our already low emissions,” says Göran Erselius, Head of Analysis and Co-Founder of 2050.
These targets are not only aligned with the Paris Agreement—they are also an essential part of how we integrate climate action throughout our entire business.

Credibility Through Transparency
Having climate targets validated by SBTi means they are independently reviewed and scientifically grounded. This provides transparency and credibility—crucial in a time when many companies talk about climate ambition, but far fewer back it up with concrete commitments.
For 2050 Consulting, walking the talk is a given. By undergoing the same process we frequently guide others through, we strengthen our position as trusted advisors—and demonstrate that even smaller firms can take on a clear leadership role in climate action.

About the SBTi
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) enables companies and institutions worldwide to contribute to the climate transition. By developing standards, tools, and guidance, SBTi helps organizations set science-based emission reduction targets aligned with what is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change. The aim is to keep global warming within safe levels and Active net zero by 2050.
The initiative is backed by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), the We Mean Business Coalition, and WWF.
