Climate Implications of an Ambitious Growth Strategy

How does the business plan impact climate targets? 2050 conducted a climate analysis to assess how Eton Shirts’ growth strategy through 2030 affects emissions, whether climate targets are aligned with the business plan, and what is required to achieve them.

Challenge: Growing While Achieving Climate Targets—Simultaneously

Eton Shirts has ambitious climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and strong growth planned through 2030. How do these align? The key question was: How will new products, markets, transportation, and production countries impact emissions, and can this growth be achieved within the targets?

Eton needed answers to:

  • How will emissions change if the plan is implemented?
  • Which areas are the main drivers of emissions?
  • Will the climate targets hold, and what is required to reach net zero by 2050?

Solution: Two Scenarios – An Adjustable Model

2050 developed a climate analysis based on two scenarios, one without and one with Eton’s planned measures. The model is built on data related to product mix, volumes, markets, transportation, and production countries, and can be continuously adjusted, enabling it to function as a dynamic decision-support tool.

Results: The Business Plan Aligns with SBTi Climate Targets—But Net Zero Requires Additional Efforts

The analysis shows a clear increase in emissions through 2030. However, with the planned measures in place, Eton can meet its Scope 3 target of a 27.5% reduction in emissions from suppliers, transportation, and materials. Achieving net zero by 2050 will require additional efforts – particularly reducing air freight, increasing the share of more sustainable materials, and lowering emissions among new suppliers.

The model serves as an ongoing decision-support tool, enabling the company to assess the impact of major decisions, such as entering new markets, selecting transport modes, choosing materials, or onboarding new suppliers, before they are made. The analysis also forms the basis for an action plan that is continuously updated as the business plan evolves.
